A path to 2050

The Paris Agreement goal to limit global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees requires deep decarbonisation. This can only be achieved by a shared determination from all involved in the energy system.

It is possible to significantly scale up the production of renewable gas within the EU, including biomethane, renewable hydrogen or renewable synthetic methane. This renewable gas can be transported, stored and distributed in existing gas infrastructure and it can be used in combination with increasing quantities of renewable electricity. This helps achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the EU by 2050 in the most cost-effective way while increasing energy security and rural employment.

Gas for Climate

The Paris Agreement goal to limit global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees requires deep decarbonization. This requires long-term energy system planning and shared determination of all involved in the energy system.

Gas for Climate is convinced that a smart combination of renewable electricity and renewable gas will achieve a net zero greenhouse gas emission EU energy system by 2050 in the most cost-efficient way.

Our vision

Gas and its infrastructure are important today and continue to be important in 2050, provided that a shift takes place towards renewable and low carbon gas to meet the Paris Agreement target of limiting global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees. Gas for Climate: a path to 2050 advocates an affordable solution in the transition to a sustainable energy system.
